Symposium Fantasy Space: Surrealism and the Architectural Imaginary International Conference in the Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester
The 1978 special issue of Architectural Design On surrealism and architecture served as a point of reference throughout the conference, as themes and specific works first discussed in it were echoed in many papers, including keynote addresses by Anthony Vidler and Stanislaus von Moos. In a conversation with Dawn Ades, who curated the groundbreaking exhibition Dada and Surrealism Reviewed that same year, Dalibor Vesely looked back on the impetus that drove him and architects such as Rem Koolhaas and Bernard Tschumi to address the theme of Surrealism and architecture twenty-five years ago. Eyes Wide Shut - Les Larves d'Imagie d'Henri Robert Marcel Duchamp, View 1945
By Eva Christina Kraus und Valentina Sonzogni Universität für angewandte Kunst/ Heiligenkreuzer Hof / Refektorium
Friedrich Kiesler (1890-1965) and Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968) worked together on some publications in the 40s.The magazine View published a special issue on Marcel Duchamp including essays by artists and writers Man Ray, André Breton, Gabrielle Buffet, Robert Desnos and Frederick Kiesler in 1945.
Kiesler designed a complex portrait of Marcel Duchamp and his work, rich of allusions and hidden references. Duchamp sits at his table in his studio, his back toward the observer. He turns his head to the center of the image, and seems to glance over his shoulder backward to the camera. The side perspectives of the studio unfold like a panorama on the two sides of the Triptych. In the Triptych, a photo collage of black and white photographs, shows two different levels: the studio (with Duchamp in the center) and some superimposed fragments from his Large Glass. Kiesler writes in an additional note: "The cut-out flaps, left and right, when bent toward the center, transform the interior wall into a vision of La mariée mise à nu par ses célibataires, même".
