Exhibition as a Vision Machine
Frederick Kiesler´s Artspace Model

Opening: Thursday, 19th of October, 2006, 7 p.m.
Mariahilfer Straße 1b, 1060 Vienna, Kiesler Foundation
Duration: October 20, 2006 – March 2, 2007
Opening hours: Monday - Thursday, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
Friday, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

The concept of Frederick Kiesler's exhibitions reveal most distinctive and new insights till today. Through alternative presentation systems, sophisticated viewing devices and spectacular room structures the exhibition turns into a „conception device“ for itself.

In accordance with the meaning and the intentions of the displayed object Kiesler successfully uses the presentation medium for his experiments in theoretical perception. The basis of his art practice is the theory of „correalism“ which is in search of the flexible relation between art and reality. In his artistic set-up Kiesler tries to link his theoretical considerations to the practical application.

Kiesler's exhibition and art rooms corrspond to universal conceptions. The „idea of a room“ is transferred to sculpture and architecture in his later works. Thus his „Shell Sculptures“, „Bucephalus“ as well as his architectural studies to an „Endless House“ show us in an impressive way the claim for overstepping the limits between the disciplines painting, sculpture and architecture.

Exhibition: Through The Looking Glass - Treasures and Secrets from the Kiesler Archive

Opening on Thursday 9th February 2006, 7 p.m. at the Kiesler Foundation Vienna

The Kiesler Foundation Vienna presents a documented reconstruction of Frederick Kiesler’s last collaboration with the Surrealist group on the occasion of the “Exposition Internationale du Surréalisme,” which opened at the Galerie Maeght in Paris on July 8, 1947. The story of this collaboration crosses its paths with private life and artistic production of several artists. Kiesler witnessed the end of Surrealism as an international artistic movement as well as Arshile Gorky’s life tragic conclusion in 1948, playing a major role in the development of the facts.

After Gorky’s suicide, painter Roberto Matta was excluded from Surrealism and returned to Europe. Kiesler was considered responsible for the purge of the Chilean artist because of a letter to Breton which remained undisclosed for many years. What did Kiesler do or say to harm Matta? Was he responsible or was he only a puppet in the hands of the mighty priests of Surrealism?

The exhibition at the Kiesler Foundation aims at throwing light on the so-called “Matta Affair” documenting it through letters and photographs to unveil the true development of the facts, while analyzing Kiesler’s role in the Surrealist network. Alongside with letters and photographs, a selection of works by Victor Brauner, Max Ernst and Toyen will be shown for the first time after the establishment of the Kiesler Foundation in 1997.
