MATTHEW RITCHIE AND HANI RASHID:
"ART IN SPACE - SPACE IN ART"

The artist from London and the New York-based architect talk about Frederick Kiesler and the relationship between art and space.

Like Kiesler, Matthew Ritchie doesn't limit himself to one artistic discipline but chooses the suitable form of expression in each case - be it drawing, painting, installation, sculpture or video. Some of Ritchie's two-dimensional drawings seem to come off the paper and form room-filling three-dimensional installations. Behind this is not only the question of the meaning of life, but also the idea of total freedom: The viewer shall realize that he/she is able to occupy and use every space at every time.

Hani Rashid, Co-founder of the New York office “Asymptote Architecture,” is among the world’s best-known architects, has taught at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna since 2011, and was himself awarded the Kiesler Prize in 2004, together with Lise Anne Couture. This places him in the ranks of internationally acclaimed names such as Frank O. Gehry, the first Kiesler prize-winner in 1998, Olafur Eliasson (2006), Toyo Ito (2008), Heimo Zobernig (2010) and, most recently, Bruce Nauman in 2014.

Exhibition: KIESLER AND BARTOS. THE SHRINE OF THE BOOK

The "Shrine of the Book" is the only realized building by Frederick Kiesler and was executed in collaboration with Armand Bartos (1910-2005). To celebrate the 50 year anniversary of the opening in April 1965, the Frederick Kiesler Foundation presents an exhibition that includes blueprints, sketches, photographs and other documents.

CHILDREN'S WORKSHOP (6.30 PM AND 8 PM)

Young architects from the age of 8 follow in Kiesler's footsteps (supervision: Beatrix Preissl-Elsner, duration: approx. 1 hour).

FILM SCREENING: TWO PROJECTS BY FREDERICK KIESLER

Heinz Emigholz' film portrays two major works by Kiesler: "Endless House" and "Shrine of the Book" (2006/9, 16 min., screened all night).
