Central European Avant-Gardes: Exchange and Transformation, 1910-1930

Haus der Kunst München, Munich

For this exhibition a section for the development of arts in the 1910 and 1920s was established. Two reconstructions of Frederick Kiesler's presentation system Träger- und Legersystem had been presented as well as the projects Raumbühne of the Internationale Ausstellung neuer Theatertechnik in Vienna 1924 and the City in Space, Paris 1925.

!AVANTGARDE! IN CENTRAL EUROPE 1910-1930

Artistic thought and action spanning genres belong to the characteristics of the Vienna Avant-garde in the 1920's.
Frederick Kiesler – artist, architect, set-designer – realises his vision of artistic unification perfectly in three famous exhibition and theatre concepts: The Leger- und Trägersystem and the Raumbühne for the Internationale Ausstellung neuer Theatertechnik, Vienna 1924, and the City in Space for the Exposition International des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, Paris 1925, are counted among the seminal objects of 20th century European architecture.

The arthistorical interest in this exhibition is concentrated not only on known centers of avant-garde art in the first half of the 20th century, but also on various Eastern European cities such as Warsaw, Cracow, Bucharest and Budapest. The Viennese art scene around Frederick Kiesler was expanded specifically for this exhibition with the assembly of a reconstructed version of the Leger- und Trägersystem, planned for the theatre exhibition in 1924.
15 photos of the projects, as well as the manifesto Organic Building – The City in Space document Kiesler's influential work in the early 1920's.

FREDERICK KIESLER – ART OF THIS CENTURY NEW YORK 1942

MMK│Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt am Main

The Frederick Kiesler Foundation Vienna is exhibiting a substantial selection of archive material from Kiesler's innovative exhibition design for Peggy Guggenheim's gallery Art of This Century New York in 1942. The presentation enables the almost complete documentation and reconstruction of the entire developmental process of Kiesler's series Art of This Century (design of the gallery Art of This Century for New York collector Peggy Guggenheim, 1942). Several hundred sketches, designs, photos, manifestos, letters and bills are made accessible to the public in a dynamic presentation of archival documents.
Throughout the year, the MMK|Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt/Main – will display a total of three large series of Kiesler's works. This will be the first comprehensive presentation of Frederick Kiesler in Germany.

SHOPPING – ART AND CONSUMER-CULTURE

Window display at SAKS Fith Avenue, New York 1927/28

The exhibition documents 100 years of fascination, interaction and approaches to graphic art in the aesthetics, strategies and seduction-techniques of consumer culture.
SHOPPING displays more than 70 artists' positions, among them the works of Frederick Kiesler, Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp, Gerhard Richter, Claes Oldenburg, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Christo, Joseph Beuys, Andreas Gursky and many others. Frederick Kiesler's extensive work is represented by 24 exhibits on loan. 17 photographs of the display designs for the department store SAKS Fifth Avenue in New York from 1927/28, as well as his publication Contemporary Art Applied To The Store And Its Display from 1930, in which Kiesler's debate on window-display design is documented. Beyond the formal criteria, Kiesler analyses important aspects of the psychology of perception as guideline for both designer and executive director in Contemporary Art Applied To The Store And Its Display. In his concepts, Kiesler seeks unified approaches to solutions from various branches of art, architecture and theatre, which place the person and his/her needs in the center of his artistic and theoretical debates.

Art of This Century
Insight into the Abstract Gallery
New York 1942

The first presentation of the Kiesler-Display consists of Frederick Kiesler's exhibition designs for Peggy Guggenheim's Gallery Art of This Century (1942). It offers insights into the archival presentation taking place simultaneously at the MMK|Museum für moderne Kunst Frankfurt am Main.
Kiesler's innovative methods of presentation and the connected theories of perception, as well as the correlation between the viewer and the object, form the basis for the continuous trial of new technical and conceptual ways to present objects in the Kiesler-Display.
On Monday, October 21, 2002 – on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the gallery opening – a reading on the subject of Kieslers manifestos and conceptual texts will take place.
